Is Your Home Ready for Rainy Weather?
As the seasons shift and stormier weather approaches, now’s the time for homeowners to prep their property for fall and winter rain. Drainage issues are one of the most common sources of costly damage—and many of them are preventable with a little exterior maintenance.
Here’s what to check before the rain hits:
Clean Out Those Gutters
Clogged gutters cause rainwater to overflow and spill down the side of your home—leading to foundation damage, siding stains, and erosion.
Clean gutters thoroughly and check for sagging or disconnected sections.

Check Downspouts & Drainage
Downspouts should extend at least 4-6 feet away from your home to keep water from pooling at the base. Add extenders if needed and make sure water is flowing away—not toward—the house.
Slope the Soil Away from the Foundation
Soil and landscaping should slope away from the home to direct water out and down. If the grading around your home is flat or tilted toward the foundation, water may seep into the crawlspace or basement during storms.
Trim Landscaping & Clear Debris
Cut back any plants, bushes, or trees touching your home’s exterior—moisture gets trapped behind them, inviting rot, mold, and pests.
Also clear away any mulch, leaves, or dirt buildup touching siding or stucco.

Pro Tip from the Inspector:
Water intrusion is one of the most common issues we find during home inspections—and it’s often caused by poor drainage or clogged gutters. A little prep now can prevent big repair bills later.
