Your Tree… Your Responsibility – CA Laws

What’s In Your Yard?

Did you know it’s your responsibility to take care of the TREE and SIDEWALK?

Landscaping around our homes is great for shade, aesthetics and may increase value of the property. Sometimes it can be dangerous and can damage your home. Tree roots that damage sidewalks and driveways can be a trip hazard. Tree roots can also damage foundations of the house. Below are some helpful tips that will keep those walking by on the sidewalk and your home safe. Plus, we listed the California law that states your responsibility of the sidewalk.

Maintenance Tips

Plant trees that are not as invasive.  Cut out roots that appear to be heading toward house, sidewalks, driveways.

Trees that grow too close, or overhang property, should be trimmed back.  This will help reduce the frequency of having to clean out the gutters, which should be done on a regular basis.

Prune or remove any plants that are in contact or proximity to home to eliminate pathways of wood destroying insects.

Trees should be planted a minimum of 8′ from structure to avoid roots from invading foundation and plumbing.

Seal cracks in sidewalk and driveway

Know the Law: CA Law 5610:   The owners of lots or portions of lots fronting on any portion of a public street or place when that street or place is improved or if and when the area between the property line of the adjacent property and the street line is maintained as a park or parking strip, shall maintain any sidewalk in such condition that the sidewalk will not endanger persons or property and maintain it in a condition which will not interfere with the public convenience in the use of those works or areas save and except as to those conditions created or maintained in, upon, along, or in connection with such sidewalk by any person other than the owner, under and by virtue of any permit or right granted to him by law or by the city authorities in charge thereof, and such persons shall be under a like duty in relation thereto.
